Every visitor to 12 South has the same shot list: the "I Believe in Nashville" mural, the angel wings at White's Mercantile, a Five Daughters donut. All worth doing once. But the version of 12 South that residents love — the slow Tuesday morning at Frothy Monkey, the late dinner at The Silly Goose, the Sunday afternoon at Sevier Park — is quieter and better. Here's the honest local list.
Coffee
Frothy Monkey
The Frothy Monkey at 12th and Wedgewood is the neighborhood's living room. Big space, dependable coffee, full food menu, reliable wifi. Most morning meetings, study sessions, and slow Saturday mornings happen here. Best feature: there's almost always somewhere to sit.
Honest Coffee Roasters
Smaller, espresso-focused, and just slightly off the main 12th strip. Quieter when Frothy is packed. Worth the short walk if you want to actually read your book.
Restaurants Worth the Reservation
The Silly Goose
Eclectic Mediterranean-Southern menu, cozy room, neighborhood-favorite dinner. Reservations help on weekends. The kind of place locals send out-of-town guests when they want to impress without the bachelorette crowd.
Burger Up
Better than a burger spot needs to be. The patio fills up on weeknights. Reliable, casual, and dependably good — the default 12 South Tuesday-night dinner.
Bartaco
Tacos, rice bowls, palomas. The patio in spring and fall is one of the better outdoor dinner experiences in the neighborhood. Walk-ins manageable on weeknights; reserve for weekends.
Josephine
Seasonal American with a tight, refined menu. Smaller room, lower volume than the splashier spots — date-night material when you want a real conversation.
Mafiaoza's Pizzeria
Long-running neighborhood pizza institution. Big enough for groups, casual enough for kids, late enough on weekends to be a post-something stop.
Casual & Quick
- •Edley's Bar-B-Que — solid Nashville barbecue, reliable lunch default.
- •The Filling Station — sandwiches, breakfast, neighborhood walk-up.
- •Las Paletas — handmade Mexican popsicles, a 12 South summer ritual since long before the neighborhood was Instagram-famous.
- •Five Daughters Bakery — the donut spot. The line is real on weekends. Locals go on weekday mornings.
- •Eight & Sand Beer Co. (just south) — neighborhood-feeling brewery taproom.
Bars & Cocktails
- •The Twelve Thirty Club (just north on Sevier) — upscale supper club. Best for special occasions and impressing out-of-town guests.
- •Bastion — speakeasy-style cocktails, members + reservations, tucked back behind a casual burger spot. Excellent program.
- •M.L.Rose Craft Beer & Burgers — neighborhood beer hall with a patio. Group-friendly.
Shopping the Strip
12 South's boutique density is genuine. Locals who live nearby actually shop the strip — it's not just a tourist row.
- •Imogene + Willie — Nashville's flagship denim brand. Quietly the most influential 12 South store of the past decade.
- •White's Mercantile — Holly Williams's curated home and gift shop. The angel wings mural on its side wall is the second-most photographed thing in the neighborhood.
- •Hero — local independent men's clothing.
- •Judith Bright — fine jewelry, locally designed.
Sevier Park: The Neighborhood's Secret Weapon
Sevier Park is the 23-acre green anchor at the southern end of the neighborhood. Big enough for real walks, dogs, kids, and a frisbee. Historic Sunnyside Mansion sits on a hill above the park; weddings and events happen there year-round. The annual Sevier Park Fest (a free weekend community event with music and food) is the neighborhood's signature day.
The Saturday Rhythm
- Coffee at Frothy Monkey or Honest, before the tourist tide picks up around 10 a.m.
- Sevier Park walk (or run on the Sevier Park loop).
- Lunch at Burger Up, Edley's, or grab tacos at Bartaco's patio.
- Skip the strip 12-3 p.m. on weekends — locals run errands or read in the park during peak foot traffic.
- Dinner at The Silly Goose, Josephine, or Mafiaoza's. Reservations recommended.
- Nightcap at Bastion (if you got a reservation) or M.L.Rose.
What's Missing (Honestly)
- •A real grocery store inside the neighborhood. The Belmont/Edgehill Publix and the Hillsboro Village Whole Foods are short drives.
- •Quiet weekend mornings on the 12th Avenue strip. If you want quiet, you go to Sevier Park or stay on the residential side streets.
- •Late-night food. Most kitchens close by 10-11 p.m.
